Introduction & Trailer

For the fourth year, DocLab and Goethe-Institut Hanoi are extremely proud to present our current edition of Hanoi DocFest – Vietnam’s only annual festival dedicated to independent creative documentaries and hybrid films.

Under this year’s theme “Realities Transformed”, the festival will showcase fresh documentary and experimental films coming mostly from Vietnam, but also Southeast Asia and Europe, that express and reflect contemporary life and society in exciting ways beyond conventional realism.

At DocFest 2016, you will be able to discover ideas personally close to the filmmakers as well as explore broader social issues through a series of films from Vietnam, Thailand, Indonesia, Macao, Germany, France, and Portugal, and will also have a chance to meet and talk with the filmmakers.

This year’s program also expands to include new workshops and discussions: a two-day workshop with German filmmaker Philip Widmann on documentary and hybrid film development processes; a discussion on the representation of landscape in films with Tran Ngoc Hieu and Nguyen Trinh Thi; as well as panel talks with Indonesian curator Hafiz Rancajale and young and dynamic Vietnamese filmmakers such as Trương Minh Quý, Phạm Thu Hằng, Tạ Minh Đức, Phạm Ngọc Lân, Đỗ Văn Hoàng, Nguyễn Thị Thắm, and Trần Phương Thảo.

A long weekend of film screenings, discussions and dialogue exchange offers many opportunities to engage with contemporary Vietnamese cinema.

18:00 - Talk with Chiangmai-based video/media artist Sutthirat Supaparinya (Som): Media Installation Practice

The talk is a sharing experience of the artist’s practice, from how to get an inspiration to create an artwork and deliver the message to public as an exhibition. The talk share artist’s work process via a selection of her media installation works.
Sutthirat Supaparinya (Som) is a Chiang Mai-based visual artist whose works in a wide variety of mediums encompassing installation, photography, video, sculpture and writing. Through her work she questions the interpretation of images, text and sound in the media, using simple everyday images to explore larger issues. Her recent projects focus on the impact of industrial activities on other humans and the landscape. Sutthirat is also seeking to cultivate a freedom of expression through her art practice.

Som is a founding member of ‘Chiangmai Art Conversation’, established in 2013 to promote contemporary art in Chiang Mai (http://www.cac-art.info). Currently, CAC is co-organizing the Asian Culture Station with Japan Foundation Asia Center in Chiang Mai. She earned a BFA in painting from the Faculty of Fine Arts, Chiang Mai University; and is a post-graduate in Media Arts from Hochschule Fuer Grafik und Buchkunst, Leipzig, Germany.

14:00 - Quest x Doclab Film Competition Award Ceremony

Quest x Doclab Short Film Competition, in its first year running, is a collaborative effort of Quest Festival and Hanoi Doclab, sponsored by Goethe Institute. This year we celebrated The Legend of Son Tinh and Thuy Tinh, asking filmmakers to choose any element that is directly or indirectly incorporated in the Legend and shoot a short film on that subject. Best 10 films have been screened at Quest Festival, awarding filmmakers with double entry to the Festival. A panel of 4 judges from Quest Festival and Hanoi Doclab have been working together to decide on the best projects and it is time now to reveal the winners of main prizes.

As a fan of Kon Ichikawa and Yasunari Kawabata, and a lover of Michio Takeyama’s novel “Harp of Burma”, he tries to express that complexity in a series of multilayered fictive/true stories through visual, aural and, especially, textual manipulations.

The film features 31-year-old Danh, a daytime employee at a software company, who lives his passion for dancing when night falls.

Every year, storm and flood devastate everything, the farmer informs his friend about the death of his father. Meanwhile, on the mountain, the amusemment park continues to entice people in the fog…

Trần Ngọc Hiếu in dialogue with Nguyễn Trinh Thi on the representation of landscape in her films, with a focus on “Letters from Panduranga” (2015).

Trần Ngọc Hiếu has been working as a lecturer at the Hà Nội National University of Education since 2001 and earned his PhD Degree in Literary Theory in 2012. His research interests include literary theories, contemporary art and Vietnamese modern literature. He both writes and translates academic texts and his work has been published in the Literary Studies Journal (Nghiên cứu văn học), the Journal of Foreign Literature (Văn học nước ngoài) and the Culture and Arts Journal (Tạp chí Văn hóa nghệ thuật).

Nguyễn Trinh Thi is a Hanoi-based moving image artist. Her diverse practice, transcending the boundaries between cinema, documentary and performance, has consistently engaged with memory and history. Her works have been shown at international festivals and art exhibitions including Jeu de Paume, Paris; CAPC musée d’art contemporain de Bordeaux; the Lyon Biennale 2015; Asian Art Biennial 2015, Taiwan; Fukuoka Asian Art Triennial 2014; and Singapore Biennale 2013.

17:00 - ARKIPEL: Framing History in the Medium of Film, presented by Arkipel's director Hafiz Rancajale

(Presented by Jakarta’s ARKIPEL International Documentary and Experimental Film Festival)

Film is one of the mediums in art most directly related to the issue of ‘archiving’ because of the inevitability of the medium itself that is recording and representing ‘social events’ and then watched by the spectators. A frame in film certainly has different background, where the motif of the director becomes critical in framing the reality; it can become a fiction, documentary, video art and experimental film. Therefore, the historical relation in film or culture of cinema hardly can be separated. Film will always be present as the ‘face’ of its time.

The films in this program are deliberately chosen to present interpretations of history and collective memory of society in the frame of cinema. There are many ways created by artists to interpret history, either through event, socio-political context, or of visual productions presented by its era. The visual productions are redefined in contemporary context. And they critically recorded the past where the presence of contemporaneity presented in broader sense. so it does not lose its context.

Over a two month period, these youngsters took a trip down memory lane to collect the testimonies of an older generation who witnessed 40 years of dictatorship and another 40 of fable-like democracy only to find out that the struggle for basic human rights has become, over the years, a delusion fueled by controls over currency and high consumption rates that numb and manipulate today’s society.

The events about how the betrayal of a common ideology was considered right.

In a house in the South of Vietnam, paths cross that separated 40 years ago and branched out as far as Germany. Of three Vietnamese brothers, one went to West Germany as a diplomat in the 1970s, where he then stayed with his family. Another brother was lost in the war. The third is the only man living in this house with the women of the Le family. Then his nephew and niece arrive from Germany to sort some things out, both material and metaphysical. The meeting of the relatives and their conversations make certain family constellations clear that are characterized by migrational experience and the ghosts of the past.

09:00 - 17:00 Workshop with Philip Widmann

In this workshop with Philip Widmann, the participants will reflect their own development processes in the making of a film project. These long and complex processes will be exemplified by a dissection of the development process of A HOUSE IN NINH HOA, discussing the relation between observation, imagination, writing and reality, as well as scripting as a tool for transparency and social structure within a project. Subsequently, the participants of the workshop will present their own projects, and discuss the joys and pitfalls of their working processes.

Philip Widmann (*1980, West-Berlin) graduated in Cultural Anthropology from the University of Hamburg and in Visual Communications from the University of Fine Arts Hamburg. Since 2009 he is a member of the artist-run film laboratory LaborBerlin. His film and video works have been shown in art spaces and film festivals internationally,among them the Wexner Center for the Arts, WRO Media Art Biennale Wroclaw, Berlin Film Festival, Rotterdam International Film Festival, New York Film Festival, FID Marseille, CPH:DOX and Visions du Réel.

18:00 - ARKIPEL: Framing History in the Medium of Film, presented by Arkipel's director Hafiz Rancajale

(Presented by Jakarta’s ARKIPEL International Documentary and Experimental Film Festival)

Film is one of the mediums in art most directly related to the issue of ‘archiving’ because of the inevitability of the medium itself that is recording and representing ‘social events’ and then watched by the spectators. A frame in film certainly has different background, where the motif of the director becomes critical in framing the reality; it can become a fiction, documentary, video art and experimental film. Therefore, the historical relation in film or culture of cinema hardly can be separated. Film will always be present as the ‘face’ of its time.

The films in this program are deliberately chosen to present interpretations of history and collective memory of society in the frame of cinema. There are many ways created by artists to interpret history, either through event, socio-political context, or of visual productions presented by its era. The visual productions are redefined in contemporary context. And they critically recorded the past where the presence of contemporaneity presented in broader sense. so it does not lose its context.

Que dia é hoje? (What day is today?)

Animated documentary short film made by the youth of the Portuguese city of Montemor-o- Novo. Over a two month period, these youngsters took a trip down memory lane to collect the testimonies of an older generation who witnessed 40 years of dictatorship and another 40 of fable-like democracy only to find out that the struggle for basic human rights has become, over the years, a delusion fueled by controls over currency and high consumption rates that numb and manipulate today’s society.

The Ghosts and the Escarlate is set in a wool factory. The voice of human is not coming from the workers, but from the narration delivered through voice-over of a man telling a story of a business rivalry hundreds years ago. The camera explores and browses the rooms inside the factory from awkward angles, The imagination and fantasy of the audience are challenged to believe and understand a place they never think before.

Menggali Buaya (The Hole)

This video essay depicts how the New Order represented the bloody events of 1965. Lubang Buaya (Crocodile Hole/Well) is a dark hole. Until today, the hole/well could never reveal the real truth. But the narratives in form of monuments, relief, dioramas, and the site itself; depicted that the events happened then were real. The events about how the betrayal of a common ideology was considered right.

Endless, Nameless

Endless, Nameless is a hand-processed Super-8 film, shot in the private garden of a high-ranking Thai army officer. The film is constructed from more than 20 years of Mont’s observations and memories about different groups of conscripts who worked alternately in this garden.

In a house in the South of Vietnam, paths cross that separated 40 years ago and branched out as far as Germany. Of three Vietnamese brothers, one went to West Germany as a diplomat in the 1970s, where he then stayed with his family. Another brother was lost in the war. The third is the only man living in this house with the women of the Le family. Then his nephew and niece arrive from Germany to sort some things out, both material and metaphysical. The meeting of the relatives and their conversations make certain family constellations clear that are characterized by migrational experience and the ghosts of the past.
